Ground Fiction: Vol. 2

Launched six months ago, the literary journal Ground Fiction publishes new work by our writing collective and guest authors. The glowing reviews came hard and fast: “A story for every mood,” “a wonderful compilation of short stories by some very talented writers,” and “Wonderfully diverse collection of stories and novel excerpts from 16 different authors.” With accolades like that, where would Ground Fiction go from there? Why, onto the second issue, of course.

Ground Fiction: Vol. 2, Issue 1 is here!

Volume 2 is leaner but still chock-full of the bold debuts that you have come to expect within our pages. But wait – there’s more! One reader, author Elizabeth Wetmore, was so impressed with our inaugural issue that she volunteered to contribute a never-before published story related to her bestselling novel Valentine!

Elizabeth Wetmore’s novel tells the unflinching, powerful tale of four exceptional women on Valentine’s Day, 1976, in the West Texas oilfield town of Odessa: Mary Rose Whitehead, a local mother, Debra Ann Pierce, an eleven-year-old neighbor grieving the loss of her mother, and Corrine Shepard, a recent widow, are all drawn into the orbit of Glory Ramírez, a fourteen-year-old local girl and the survivor of a vicious assault.

Now, exclusively in the pages of Ground FictionElizabeth Wetmore presents “Jesse Belden,” which expands on the world of Valentine with the poignant story of the Vietnam War veteran living in a drainpipe who forms a unique bond with a headstrong young girl in Odessa, Texas.

Along with this story, Ground Fiction 2 includes:

Kate M. Colby’s “A Hex on Hallowed Ground,” the harrowing adventure of former paranormal investigator Lorena Rivera sucked into the case of an destructive witch and a disturbing desecration crime in historic Salem, Massachusetts.

Victoria Ferenbach brings a brilliantly colored art world to life in “Partners in Crime.” At an opening night gala for celebrated painter Sam Field, aspiring artist Natalie Ballard finds out what’s really on display, and the true price she would have to pay to enter New York’s lionized art scene.

Jennifer Fickley-Baker presents a world slowly burning through a massive catastrophe in “Extinct Things.” Marina St. James and her two young daughters find themselves waylaid among the dinosaurs in a natural history museum, with her former beau, amid terrifying turmoil. With life speeding toward an unstoppable end, she questions just how much time they all have left.

These are just a handful of the amazing characters, timely issues, thrilling adventures, and clever dramas that readers will find in Ground Fiction
